Girijamma R.: A Journey of Courage, Service and Dedication to Society

From a Barefoot Journey for Kannada Pride to Empowering More Than 10,000 Girls — The Inspiring Story of a Woman Who Chose Service Over Recognition

Some people live their lives for personal success, while others find their purpose in making life better for the people around them. Girijamma R. belongs to the second category. A social worker, artist, journalist and Kannada activist, she has dedicated her journey to protecting girls, empowering women, preserving Kannada culture and raising her voice for the welfare of society.

Her life is a reflection of courage, perseverance and a deep sense of responsibility towards her language, her land and her people. From walking barefoot for 108 days to championing girls’ safety through a campaign that reached more than 10,000 students, Girijamma has shown that meaningful change often begins with one person who refuses to give up.

For her, social service is not simply a responsibility. It is a commitment that comes from the heart.

A Life Guided by Purpose

Girijamma R. has built her journey around several causes that are closely connected to the well-being of society. As the State President of Kannada Nadu Hitarakshana Samiti and a representative of GK Royal Foundation, she has worked across Kannada language activism, women's empowerment, child safety, journalism, cultural activities and community welfare.

Her journey has not been limited to one profession or one platform. She has used different avenues to communicate her message, whether through social initiatives, public campaigns, journalism or the performing arts.

At the heart of her work is a simple belief: society becomes stronger when people are aware of their rights, girls feel safe, women are empowered, and language and culture receive the respect they deserve.

This belief has guided her efforts and continues to shape her vision for the future.

Nirbhaya Vidyarthini Campaign: A Mission to Make Girls Safer

One of the most significant milestones in Girijamma R.'s social-service journey is the Nirbhaya Vidyarthini Self-Defence Campaign, organised through GK Royal Foundation.

The campaign was built around a powerful message: every girl deserves to feel safe, confident and prepared to face challenges in life.

Conducted from 1 August to 31 August 2026, the initiative aimed to reach 60 schools within 24 working days, excluding Sundays and government holidays. Through this campaign, more than 10,000 girl students received awareness and guidance on personal safety, self-protection and confidence-building.

The programme covered important subjects such as recognising potentially dangerous situations, understanding good touch and bad touch, responding to unsafe circumstances, developing mental preparedness and knowing when and how to seek help.

Beyond the educational sessions, the campaign carried an important emotional message. Girls should not grow up feeling helpless or afraid to speak about their safety. They deserve the confidence to recognise risks, express their concerns and seek support when necessary.

Girijamma personally interacted with students, encouraged them to speak up and motivated them to become more aware of their safety and rights.

The campaign was recognised as a world-record achievement, marking an important milestone in her efforts towards girls' safety and empowerment.

For Girijamma, however, the greatest significance of the campaign lies beyond the record itself. It lies in the possibility that a girl who learns to recognise danger, ask for help and trust her own voice may feel better prepared to protect herself.

Its guiding motto captures the spirit of the initiative:

“Safe Girl, Strong Society.”

Through this campaign, Girijamma has sought to remind families, schools and communities that protecting girls is not the responsibility of one individual or organisation. It is a collective responsibility that requires awareness, education and action.

The 108-Day Bhuvaneshwari Rath Yatra: Walking Barefoot for Kannada Pride

Another defining chapter in Girijamma's life is her 108-day Bhuvaneshwari Rath Yatra, undertaken with the dream of establishing a grand Temple of Goddess Bhuvaneshwari in Bengaluru.

The yatra commenced on 17 March 2023, with renowned Kannada literary figures Dr. Chandrashekhara Kambara and Dodda Range Gowda participating in its inauguration.

For Girijamma, the journey represented much more than a religious undertaking. It expressed her love for Kannada language, cultural identity, heritage and the spirit of Kannada Thayi.

One of the most striking aspects of the yatra was her decision to walk barefoot.

Choosing to continue the journey without footwear became a personal expression of devotion and commitment to the cause she had embraced. Undertaking a 108-day journey demanded perseverance and dedication, and she pursued it through her own efforts and resources.

A journey of this nature carries meaning beyond the distance travelled. Every step becomes a reminder of the purpose behind the effort. For Girijamma, the yatra symbolised her determination to keep the dream of a dedicated Bhuvaneshwari Temple alive.

Even after completing the journey, she has continued to cherish that vision.

Her message remains clear: a cause rooted in love for one's language and culture deserves sustained commitment, even when the path is difficult.

A Strong Voice for Kannada Language and Culture

As the State President of Kannada Nadu Hitarakshana Samiti, Girijamma has participated in initiatives supporting Kannada language, the rights of Kannadigas and the preservation of Karnataka's cultural identity.

Her Kannada-related activities include participation in the Cauvery water struggle, campaigns supporting Kannada name boards and other efforts promoting Kannada language and culture.

For Girijamma, Kannada is not merely a means of communication. It represents identity, heritage, self-respect and a cultural legacy that must be preserved for future generations.

Her involvement in Kannada activism reflects her belief that a language remains alive and strong when people use it, respect it and actively support its place in society.

Her commitment is connected to a larger purpose: encouraging people to recognise the importance of their cultural roots while ensuring that future generations remain connected to their linguistic heritage.

Journalism: Giving Ordinary People a Voice

Girijamma's work as a journalist and social reporter has provided another platform through which she can highlight public concerns.

She believes journalism should do more than report events. It should also draw attention to problems affecting ordinary people and help bring those concerns to the attention of the appropriate authorities.

One example from her reporting journey involved a bus stop near a school where, according to the account of her work, buses had reportedly not been stopping for approximately 40 years.

Following her report, a bus-stop facility was provided near the school.

This experience illustrates why socially responsible journalism matters. Sometimes, a problem that has continued for years becomes visible only when someone decides to raise the issue publicly.

For the people affected, even a seemingly small improvement can make a practical difference in daily life.

Through her media activities, including Garjisu Kannada, Girijamma continues to support Kannada-related causes and socially relevant issues.

Her work reflects the belief that a journalist's responsibility extends beyond describing a problem. Raising awareness and encouraging attention to public concerns can also become part of the process of positive change.

A Passion for Acting and the Performing Arts

Alongside her social work and Kannada activism, Girijamma has pursued her interest in acting.

She has appeared in films and television serials, portraying different characters, including police officers and doctors, as well as taking on guest roles.

The performing arts provide another way to communicate with people, express ideas and connect with audiences through storytelling.

For Girijamma, acting represents a creative dimension of her personality that exists alongside her commitment to public service.

Her journey across the arts, journalism and social activism demonstrates her willingness to explore different ways of reaching people and communicating messages that matter to her.

Rather than restricting herself to one identity, she has continued to develop different interests while remaining connected to the causes she believes in.

GK Royal Foundation: Working for Women and Children

Through GK Royal Foundation, Girijamma supports initiatives focused on women's empowerment, child welfare, education, personal safety, health awareness, environmental activities and cultural programmes.

Her approach to social welfare is built on the belief that every individual deserves dignity, awareness and opportunities to improve their life.

Women need more than protection; they also need confidence, independence and the ability to make informed decisions. Children need safe environments in which they can learn, grow and express themselves without fear.

The foundation's activities include awareness programmes on women's and children's safety, educational initiatives, health camps, environmental activities and programmes promoting art and culture.

Girijamma's work in these areas reflects her understanding that community development requires attention to different aspects of life.

Safety education can help children recognise risks. Women's empowerment initiatives can encourage confidence and independence. Educational and health-awareness programmes can help communities make more informed choices.

Her work seeks to bring these concerns into public awareness and encourage people to participate in building stronger communities.

She believes that when a girl becomes more confident, her family can become stronger. When girls across society gain confidence and awareness, the benefits can extend to the wider community.

Awards and Recognition: Milestones Along the Journey

Girijamma R. has received several honours in recognition of her contributions to social service, Kannada activism and public welfare.

Among the recognitions she has mentioned are:

  • Karnataka Praja Bhooshana

  • Seva Ratna

  • Karnataka Horatagarathi recognition

  • State-level award for outstanding social service

  • World-record recognition associated with the Nirbhaya Vidyarthini Campaign

These recognitions represent important milestones in her journey and acknowledge different aspects of her public engagement.

Yet, the causes she supports remain central to her work. The safety of girls, the empowerment of women, the preservation of Kannada culture and the welfare of society continue to define her priorities.

For someone who has dedicated herself to multiple public causes, recognition is meaningful, but it is not the only measure of achievement.

The deeper value of her work lies in the awareness she helps create, the issues she brings forward and the people she encourages to become more confident and informed.

The Challenges Behind a Life of Service

A life devoted to public causes requires sustained effort, patience and personal commitment. Social change rarely happens through a single programme or one public appearance. It requires people to keep returning to the same concerns, encouraging participation and reminding communities why those concerns matter.

Girijamma's journey across activism, journalism, cultural initiatives and social welfare reflects this continuing commitment.

Her 108-day barefoot yatra represents her personal dedication to Kannada culture. Her Nirbhaya Vidyarthini Campaign reflects her determination to promote girls' safety on a large scale. Her journalistic work demonstrates her willingness to highlight public issues, while her association with GK Royal Foundation connects her efforts to broader community needs.

Each initiative expresses a different aspect of her work, yet all are connected by a common purpose: creating a society that is safer, more aware and more respectful of human dignity.

A Vision for the Next Generation

Girijamma R.'s vision extends beyond the achievements of the present.

She hopes for a society in which girls can pursue their dreams with confidence, women can live with dignity and independence, children can grow in safer environments, and Kannada language and culture continue to receive respect.

Her work also carries a message for younger generations: meaningful change does not always begin with a powerful position or abundant resources. It can begin with one person's determination to stand for a cause and continue working towards it.

Her journey encourages young people to recognise that social responsibility can take many forms. It may involve protecting children, helping communities become aware of their rights, raising public concerns through journalism, preserving cultural heritage or participating in educational initiatives.

Every sincere effort can become part of a larger movement when people are willing to contribute consistently.

A Woman Whose Journey Is Still Continuing

The story of Girijamma R. is not simply a story of awards, public roles or professional identities. It is a story of a woman who has chosen to connect her talents and efforts with the welfare of others.

As a social worker, she supports community welfare. As a Kannada activist, she works to preserve language and cultural identity. As a journalist, she seeks to bring public concerns into focus. As an artist, she expresses her creativity through performance. Through GK Royal Foundation, she supports initiatives related to women, children, education, safety and awareness.

Her journey reminds us that service to society does not have to be confined to one field. A person can contribute through several paths while remaining faithful to a central purpose.

The barefoot steps of the Bhuvaneshwari Rath Yatra, the voices of more than 10,000 girls reached through the Nirbhaya Vidyarthini Campaign and the public concerns raised through her journalism each represent a different part of that purpose.

For Girijamma R., true achievement is not measured only by the honours received, but by the confidence built in a girl, the awareness created in a community and the positive change that becomes possible when someone chooses to act.

Her journey carries a powerful message for every generation: courage gives a cause its voice, dedication keeps it alive, and service gives it meaning.

“My life is not just for myself; it is dedicated to my language, my land, the safety of girls and the welfare of society.” — Girijamma R.
