Deepu R.S.’s Inspiring Journey from Chadayamangalam to Global Recognition

Some people are given an easy road to walk on. Others have to create their own path, one difficult step at a time.

For Deepu R.S., life has never been about having everything easy. A native of Chadayamangalam, Kerala, Deepu has been living with EDMD Muscular Dystrophy, a rare genetic mobility disorder. Yet, instead of allowing his physical limitations to decide the size of his dreams, he chose to express himself through words, music, cinema, and service.

Today, Deepu is known as a writer, lyricist, filmmaker, and United Nations Volunteer. His journey from a humble background to literary and international recognition is not simply a story of awards and achievements. It is a story of a person who continued to create even when life gave him reasons to stop.

When Limitations Became a Source of Strength

Deepu’s journey has been shaped by challenges that many people may find difficult to imagine. Living with a mobility disorder has meant facing physical limitations in everyday life. But somewhere along the way, he learned that the body may have limitations, while the imagination does not.

Without relying on conventional pathways, Deepu developed his knowledge and creative abilities largely through self-learning. Writing became one of the ways through which he could express his thoughts, experiences, emotions, and understanding of the world.

What started as a personal passion gradually became a much larger journey.

His work eventually reached readers, audiences, filmmakers, musicians, social organizations, and international platforms.

A Historic Chapter in Malayalam Literature

One of the most memorable milestones in Deepu’s literary journey came with Sudhamaya Gatha, a Malayalam biographical epic poem, or Khandakavya.

The work entered the London Book of World Records and was recognized as the first biographical epic poem in Malayalam about a North Indian writer. The poem chronicles the life and literary contributions of renowned linguist Prof. Dr. Sudhanshu Chaturvedi.

For Deepu, this achievement represents much more than a record. It reflects years of writing, learning, and persistence.

The work features forewords by former Kerala Sahitya Akademi President K. Satchidanandan and Kendra Sahitya Akademi Award winner Omchery. It has also received recognition including the Mahakavi P. Foundation Thamarathoni Award.

His literary journey has not been limited to Malayalam. His English poetry collection, My Quarantine Tales, received an Appreciation Award from the India Book of Records. His other works include Adithyante Vihwalathakal and Ente Pushpaka Vimanam.

From Words on a Page to Songs on Screen

For Deepu, creativity has never belonged to just one medium.

His words have travelled from books to music and cinema. He has written more than 150 songs across nearly 100 albums in Malayalam, Hindi, and Tamil.

Some of his lyrics have been brought to life by celebrated playback singers including P. Jayachandran, M.G. Sreekumar, and Minmini.

He has also contributed to the soundtracks of films including Edwinte Namam, Shikhandi, and Mazhavil Kanavukal.

Every song became another way for him to communicate emotions that cannot always be explained through ordinary conversation.

Finding His Voice Behind the Camera

Deepu eventually moved from writing for cinema to creating cinema himself.

As a director, he created the musical short film Amma Megham, which received recognition at international film festivals including the Tagore International Film Festival, Paris International Film Festival, and Satyajit Ray International Film Award.

He also co-produced Ennu Sakshal Daivam, a film that received a URF World Record after being shot and exhibited in theatres within 16 hours.

Today, he continues to dream bigger. He is in the pre-production stage of a full-length horror film in which he will take on the dual responsibilities of director and lyricist.

For someone whose own physical movement is restricted by a genetic condition, the scale of his creative movement is remarkable.

Turning Personal Pain into Compassion

Perhaps the most meaningful part of Deepu’s journey is not found in his books, songs, films, or awards.

It is found in the way he responds to the struggles of other people.

His own experiences have given him a deep understanding of vulnerability. Instead of keeping that experience confined to his personal life, he has used it to connect with people who are often overlooked.

As a United Nations National Volunteer in India, Deepu has been involved in several social and community initiatives.

He has participated in plastic eradication campaigns, tree-planting programmes, educational activities, disability awareness initiatives, and public welfare campaigns.

He has also contributed a portion of his modest income to help people who are struggling with poverty and illness.

Perhaps most importantly, he actively identifies grassroots social workers whose contributions deserve greater visibility and brings their work to the attention of the United Nations.

Recognition That Tells Only Part of the Story

Deepu’s contribution across literature, cinema, culture, and social service has brought him several national and international recognitions.

His honours include the Honorary Doctorate from Dunster Business School, Switzerland, received in December 2025, the National Prestige Award 2026 from the Global Research Foundation, USA, and the UN Global Compact Award for outstanding international social service.

He has also received the Sadananda Award for social, cultural, and volunteer activities, presented by former Kerala Governor Dr. Arif Mohammed Khan, and the Bharathashree National Award 2023 for exceptional social service.

In October 2025, he also participated in a Guinness World Record initiative through the Sintex Water Hygiene Campaign.

But for Deepu, a certificate or trophy can never fully describe what the journey has demanded from him.

A Success Story Written One Day at a Time

There is something deeply human about Deepu R.S.’s story.

He did not begin with extraordinary advantages. He began with limitations, uncertainty, and a desire to create something meaningful.

There were undoubtedly moments when life could have made him question his dreams. Yet he continued to write. He continued to create music. He continued to make films. He continued to work for others.

That consistency became his strength.

His story reminds us that success does not always mean reaching the destination quickly. Sometimes, success means refusing to stop moving toward the destination, even when every step takes more courage than it does for others.

Looking Beyond the Awards

Today, Deepu continues to explore literature, music, filmmaking, and social service. His ambitions remain larger than the recognition he has already received.

He wants to continue creating meaningful art, contribute to cinema, promote disability awareness, support people in need, and encourage others facing difficult circumstances not to give up on themselves.

His journey from Chadayamangalam to international recognition is therefore more than a success story.

It is a story about hope.

It is about choosing creativity when circumstances suggest silence, choosing service when personal struggles could become an excuse to withdraw, and choosing to dream even when the road ahead is uncertain.

Deepu R.S. has shown that a person does not need perfect circumstances to create an extraordinary life.

Sometimes, all that is needed is the courage to keep going.
