At just 26 years of age, the young social worker from Cuttack, Odisha, has already dedicated a significant part of his life to helping people who are poor, helpless and in need of medical or humanitarian support. Associated with SCB Medical as a Supervisor and Medical Staff, Hemanta has transformed his own difficult life experience into a reason to serve others.

Hemanta Kumar Nayak is an eye cancer survivor who went through nearly three years of difficult treatment.
Those years were filled with challenges, uncertainty and emotional hardship. At a stage when a young person would naturally look towards family and loved ones for strength, Hemanta was fortunate to receive extraordinary support from Mr. Bibhuti Kumar Ray.
Hemanta describes him as a noble person who stood beside him like an angel. He supported his treatment, cared for him like his own son, helped him continue his education and guided him towards the right path in life.
That support left a deep impression on Hemanta.
He understood from his own experience what it means when someone reaches out to a person during the most difficult phase of life. Instead of allowing his struggle to become a limitation, he turned it into a purpose.

From a Survivor to a Social Worker
After overcoming his own health challenges, Hemanta chose a path of service.
As a young social worker, he became increasingly involved in helping underprivileged, poor and helpless people, particularly those facing difficulties in accessing medical care.

35 Blood Donations and Thousands of Lives Touched
One of the strongest examples of Hemanta's commitment to humanitarian service is his contribution to blood donation.
At the age of only 26, he has personally donated blood 35 times.
But his contribution goes far beyond his own donations. Through his efforts and coordination, he has helped arrange approximately 5,000 units of blood for poor and needy patients.
For families waiting anxiously outside a hospital, a unit of blood can represent much more than a medical requirement—it can represent hope.
Hemanta's work in connecting blood donors with patients has therefore become an important part of his social service journey.

Standing With People During the COVID-19 Crisis
The COVID-19 pandemic became another defining chapter in Hemanta Kumar Nayak's journey.
When fear and uncertainty spread across communities, he chose to step forward and help people in difficult circumstances.
During the pandemic, he visited homes to provide medicines, oxygen and food to people who needed assistance. His service extended beyond conventional expectations of humanitarian work.
He also participated in the cremation and last rites of people who lost their lives during the pandemic, performing a difficult responsibility at a time when many families were facing extraordinary circumstances.
During the lockdown, when people were stranded and unable to return to their homes, Hemanta helped arrange transportation so that they could safely reach their families.
His contribution during this challenging period brought him several recognitions, including the Utkal Mail TV Corona Fighter Award, Public Rights Association Corona Warrior Award – 2021 and “Kehi Nahin Jahara, Ame Achhu Tahara” Corona Warrior Samman – 2021.

He has been involved in distributing food, clothing and essential items among poor and helpless people.
He also contributes to missing-person assistance in Odisha, helping families in their search for missing individuals.
